Finding Form in LAKE TAHOE!
JUNE 23 -27 // $800
Spend five days with me in Lake Tahoe! Hosted by UNR in Incline Village, this workshop introduces coil and pinch techniques for building vessels. Participants will explore creating transitional edges, cantilevered planes, and full curves, developing a personal vocabulary in clay through demonstrations and one-on-one instruction. This workshop will also include conversations around building and sustaining a creative practice. Students will be able to take home bisqueware and a couple cone 6 glaze-fired pieces. Coil Building in Portland!
MAY 3-4 @ NOLA CLAY in Portland, OR // $300
In this two-day workshop, students will join Helena, Montana-based ceramic artist Giselle Hicks for 2 days of coiling and pinch pot techniques for building vessels. Students will meet from 10 am-4pm on Saturday and 10-3 on Sunday.
Coil and pinch is a fundamental ceramic process, so this workshop is excellent for beginners, intermediate, and advanced makers. The technique can be applied to both functional and sculptural forms. Giselle will discuss achieving clear transitional edges, dramatic cantilevered planes, and full curves. Between demos, participants will have time to practice the technique with one-on-one guidance from Giselle.
Included in the cost of the class is the firing of 2 pieces made during the workshop that can be glazed for you by the studio using Giselle’s studio white.

Coil Built Vessels In San Fran!
April 12 - 13 @ Wheelhouse Clay in SF // $395
Join Giselle Hicks on a two-day hands-on workshop focusing on pinching and coiling techniques for creating vessels. This fundamental ceramic process is suitable for beginners, intermediate, and advanced makers, enabling participants to create functional or sculptural forms.
Giselle will provide an overview of her process at the start and will guide us through creating seamless transitions and angled designs. Between demos, participants will have time to practice the techniques with one-on-one guidance from Giselle.
Each student can fire up to two vessels in this workshop. Additional work can be fired for a fee for non-members. Once bisqued, you can come back and glaze your pieces which we will fire for you up to cone 5/6 (we will let you know when they are ready via email). Students are welcome to have their pieces bisque fired and can later pick up to glaze and fire in their own studios.

Building Zig Zag Vessels

This 1.5 hour workshop is focused on making zig zag/geometric vessels using a coil and pinch hand-building technique. Coil and pinch is a fundamental ceramic process, so this is a great class for beginners, intermediate and advanced makers. The technique can be applied to both functional and sculptural forms. I begin with an overview of the fundamentals of coil building including rolling coils and pinching up a wall. The bulk of the demonstration focuses on the components and considerations for coiling compound forms. I address how to achieve clear transitional edges, the importance of timing with coil building, and constructing cantilevered planes.

Building Round Vessels

This workshop is focused on making spheres and curvilinear vessels using a coil and pinch hand-building technique. Coil and pinch is a fundamental ceramic process, so this is a great class for beginners, intermediate and advanced makers. I begin with a concise overview of the fundamentals of coil building including rolling coils and pinching up a wall. The bulk of the demonstration focuses on achieving full, generous, curved forms. I introduce a technique of building upside-down that will help you get started. It’s weird, but it works!

This workshop is focused on using a coil and pinch hand-building technique, starting with a handmade template, to build complex compound forms. Coil and pinch is a fundamental ceramic process, so this is a great class for beginners, intermediate, and advanced makers alike.
I begin with a concise overview of the fundamentals of coil building including rolling coils and pinching up a wall. The demonstration introduces making and using templates to bring shape to the base of the form, building and assembling components, making directional transitions, adding feet, and more!
